It is nominated as a district.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the farm is a well-preserved early twentieth-century cotton and peanut operation that represents agriculture in Halifax County during 1902-1940. Its I-house and moved kitchen are regarded as significant because few comparable farmhouses and detached kitchens survive in the county. The farm also illustrates tenancy and sharecropping within one family.","narrative":"North of Weldon in north Halifax County, the Garner Farm is a 110-acre complex of fields, woodland and farm buildings centered on a frame I-house built about 1901-1902 by local carpenter Jim Johnson for Lonnie Thomas Garner. The two-story house has pedimented gable ends and no first-story windows in its narrow gables. A detached kitchen, moved on site in 1942, and a 1920 pack house survive from the original farmstead, along with a smokehouse, mule and cow barns, and a peanut dryer. The farm was worked by sharecroppers and by members of the Garner family from 1911 onward, and the Garners grew cotton, peanuts, corn and some tobacco during the decades before 1940. Its buildings and field pattern document a typical middle-class farmstead of the period, and few comparable examples remain in the county. The farm is still operated by family members today.","period_of_significance":"1902-1940","architect_builder":"Jim Johnson (local carpenter)","architectural_style":"I-house","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Farm in continued use as a modern family farm operated by the Garner brothers","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:41.009768-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7206/47720650/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/90000826.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000826/1f6a7fec5e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000826/1f6a7fec5e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GARNER_FARM,_DAYS_CROSSROADS,_HALIFAX_COUNTY,_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720650","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garner_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461912"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/halifax-county/garner-farm-90000826/"}
