It is also an excellent example of Tudor Revival architecture with some of the finest interior woodwork of any Greek house on campus (Criterion C).","narrative":"Delta Upsilon Fraternity House, at 312 East Armory Avenue in Champaign, was built in 1926-1927 to a design by Leonard Stuebe of Danville, a 1903 University of Illinois graduate. It cost about $100,000. The two-and-one-half-story building combines dark English bond brick with half-timbering, a massive brick chimney, steeply pitched gables and stone detailing around the south door. Inside, the living room fireplaces have Tudor-arched limestone openings, and the dining room has wood wainscot about five feet high. The house is significant for two reasons. It represents the Greek Letter Society movement at the University of Illinois, which by 1928 was the largest in the nation, and it shows how fraternity houses became the main form of organized student housing on campus. It is also a strong example of Tudor Revival style. Alterations include a 1964 kitchen addition, replacement windows and a metal stairwell, but the original exterior and upper-floor room layouts remain largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1926-1940","architect_builder":"Stuebe, Leonard (Architect)","architectural_style":"Tudor Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as part of an active fraternity; the building retains its historic and structural integrity apart from a 1964 rear kitchen addition, window replacements and some interior changes for code compliance.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.565798-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/77/8907/28890777/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/90000749.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000749/58235ddb20-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000749/58235ddb20-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Delta_Upsilon_uiuc.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Delta_Upsilon_uiuc.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28890777","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Upsilon_Fraternity_House_(Champaign,_Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20711241"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/champaign-county/delta-upsilon-fraternity-house-90000749/"}
