It also has ties to the Rudisill family and to Adam Miller Jr., a locally prominent Lutheran minister. Its agricultural significance was lost in 1977 when the house tract was separated from the farm.","narrative":"Located northwest of Maiden in south Catawba County, this two-story frame farmhouse dates to about 1820 and is regarded as one of the finest Federal style farmhouses left in the county. It has a three-bay front, shed-roofed porches with turned balusters, molded eaves, a double-shoulder brick chimney laid in Flemish bond, and a six-panel front door under a four-light transom. Inside, five Federal mantels survive, along with six-panel doors, enclosed stairs with sponge-painted risers, and two doors with painted mahogany graining. The house may have been built by Michael Rudisill Jr. or his father, and in 1836 it passed to Adam Miller Jr., a Lutheran minister who farmed grain and livestock there. His descendants, later named Cansler, kept it until 1977 and shifted the farm toward dairying. A circa 1941 rear ell, a well-shed/dairy and a modern garage complete the property, which is recognized for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1820","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the original portion is well preserved, with a circa 1941 rear ell added and some foundation materials replaced.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.945308-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/7173/47717378/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/90000741.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717378","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller%E2%80%93Cansler_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18154422"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/catawba-county/miller-cansler-house-90000741/"}
