It is also the only intact historic structure left from Chubbtown, a settlement founded by the free-black Chubb family, one of Georgia's few free-black settlements.","narrative":"Chubb Methodist Episcopal Church, now Chubb Chapel United Methodist Church, is a small wooden country church built in 1870 in the rural community of Chubbtown, near Cave Spring in Floyd County, Georgia. Its walls are vertical heart pine planks covered in board-and-batten siding, set on a field-stone foundation under a gable roof. Inside, the original heart pine pews and one of three hanging brass kerosene lamps survive. The church was built in and by a free-black community founded by the Chubb family, who arrived in Floyd County in the early 1860s, bought land and developed a self-sufficient settlement with mills, a store, a blacksmith shop and a post office. A flood in the 1940s destroyed many of the family's businesses. The church is the only intact historic structure left from that community. It was listed for its vernacular Gothic Revival design and for its link to black history in Georgia. It remains in use as a church.","period_of_significance":"1870-1940","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a church, now called Chubb Chapel United Methodist Church; a 1960s concrete-block addition and a 1986 aluminum fellowship hall have been added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.849108-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/90000728.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000728/ac53d3a8ed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000728/ac53d3a8ed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Cyntata2672","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chubb_United_Methodist_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cyntata2672</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chubb_United_Methodist_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207986","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134304319"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/floyd-county/chubb-methodist-episcopal-church-90000728/"}
