It is also Gloucester's only example of the Mission style, designed by architect Halfdan M. Hanson. It retains the first carillon bells installed in the United States.","narrative":"Our Lady of Good Voyage Church is a stuccoed Mission-style church on a hill above Gloucester's waterfront, with an attached rectory wing. It was built in 1914 after fire destroyed the parish's first church, dedicated in 1893. Architect Halfdan M. Hanson designed it, and Henry Dana Sleeper designed the original interior. Its features include twin bell towers, ogee pediments, a rose window and stained-glass windows, and it is the only Mission-style building in Gloucester. The parish was founded in 1889 by Portuguese immigrants, many from the Azores, who came to work in the fishing industry. Their families built homes around the church and kept Old Country traditions alive there. In 1945 it was dedicated the Shrine of the Fisherman. The towers hold carillon bells cast by John Taylor & Company of England and installed in 1922, said to be the first carillon bells in the United States. It was listed for its ethnic heritage and its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1889-1939 as stated in the form; the listing amendment sets the beginning date at 1914.","architect_builder":"Hanson, Halfdan M.; Sleeper, Henry Dana; Taylor, John & Company","architectural_style":"Mission / Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use as a church; the 1950 parish hall on the lot is noncontributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.607695-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/84/7948/63794884/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000706.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000706/c8492f49cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000706/c8492f49cd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Our_Lady_of_Good_Voyage_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Our_Lady_of_Good_Voyage_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794884","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Good_Voyage_Church_(Gloucester,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715802"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/our-lady-of-good-voyage-church-90000706/"}
