The T. L. Bandy House dates to 1884 and the J. S. Bandy House is dated 1887.","why_significant":"The houses are rare survivors of brick farmhouse construction in a county where frame dwellings dominated until well into the twentieth century. The brick outbuilding next to the T. L. Bandy house is described as one of the most outstanding nineteenth-century outbuildings in the county. The brothers were also local schoolteachers and county surveyors, linking the farms to the community.","narrative":"Two two-story brick farmhouses built in the mid-1880s stand on adjacent farms in east central Catawba County, North Carolina, near Bandy's Crossroads. Theodore Lafayette Bandy completed his house in November 1884, and the date 1887 is painted on the chimney of his brother Joseph Schofield Bandy's house. Both are nearly identical in plan, with a central hall flanked by two rooms per floor and a rear ell. The T. L. Bandy house has common bond brickwork with pencilled joints, a transomed front door, Classical mantels, and a stair with sawnwork brackets. Its brick outbuilding, probably used as a smokehouse and granary, has raised brick lintels, corner pilasters, and corbelled gables. The houses are significant because brick was rare in the county at that time, and they represent a small surviving group of late nineteenth-century rural brick dwellings. The brothers were also county surveyors and teachers.","period_of_significance":"1884-1887","architect_builder":"Moser, E.P.; Hunsucker, W.J. (builders named on the T. L. Bandy house and its brick outbuilding have been unoccupied for some years and are deteriorated, used for storage; the Joseph S. Bandy house is occupied by tenants.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.360997-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/7173/47717388/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/90000663.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717388","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandy_Farms_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18148345"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/catawba-county/bandy-farms-historic-district-90000663/"}
