A. Harp.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an excellent, largely intact example of Queen Anne architecture, with asymmetrical massing, conical-roofed bays, a two-level wrapped porch, spindlework and original interior woodwork. It is one of the few remaining Queen Anne buildings in Thomaston. It was also built by a prominent local merchant.","narrative":"Built between 1876 and 1880 on what was then the edge of Thomaston, Georgia, this two-story wooden house was constructed by local merchant W. A. Harp (1853-1920), who also built several downtown commercial buildings. It is a Queen Anne style dwelling with an asymmetrical plan, a large hipped roof with a gable-on-hip form, two bays with conical roofs and a two-level porch with turned posts and spindlework that wraps around the front. Inside, heart-pine floors, plaster walls, stained glass, carved doors, wainscoting and eight mantels, some with mirrors and cast-iron fireboxes, survive. The house was divided into seven apartments in the late 1930s, when rooms were added at the rear, and was restored in 1984 as an antique shop. It was listed for its architecture, as a distinctive and well-preserved local example of the style, notable for its unusual wrapped two-level porch and as one of few Queen Anne buildings remaining in Thomaston.","period_of_significance":"1876-1880","architect_builder":"W.
