It is significant in agriculture as a diversified yeoman farm that grew from its mid-1800s beginnings to 1,300 acres by 1895. It illustrates Sol Akins' rise from yeoman to middle-class farmer.","narrative":"Sol Akins Farm is a rural property south of Statesboro in Bulloch County, Georgia. Its centerpiece is a two-story Plantation Plain farmhouse that grew from a four-room log dogtrot house raised around 1864, when Akins and his wife held a log rolling to build a house and barn. Around 1880 the log core was enlarged and covered with heart-pine weatherboarding, and a rear ell and Z-shaped porch were added. The log structure was rediscovered in the 1930s under the siding. Original paneling, wainscoting, floors and mantels survive. A double-crib log barn with saddle-notched corners also remains, along with a family cemetery. Akins, a Confederate veteran, built a diversified farm producing corn, cotton, oats, molasses, wool and livestock, reaching 1,300 acres by 1895. The changes to his house reflect his growing prosperity. The property is considered a good local example of a type of farm common in southeast Georgia in the late 19th century. The house has been vacant since 1977, while the land is still farmed.","period_of_significance":"c. 1864-1907","architect_builder":"Solomon Akins","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century; Other: Plantation Plain","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The house has been vacant since 1977, but the farm remains in agricultural production.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.498076-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/90000487.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207149","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol_Akins_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q40888877"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bulloch-county/akins-sol-farm-90000487/"}
