It sits on about six acres.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an excellent example of late 19th-century Victorian architecture, with largely Italianate features, and one of the best in Brenham. Its vertical, symmetrical emphasis is typical of the Italianate style, and it retains a high degree of integrity. It is tied to the local context of community development and regional expansion, 1870-1941.","narrative":"Built around 1880 for the Seelhorst family, German immigrants, this two-story masonry house faces north on roughly six acres in southeast Brenham, Texas. It has a center-passage, double-pile plan, five bays, and a hipped standing-seam metal roof on brick piers. The walls are three bricks deep, about 13 inches thick, and plastered inside and out. Italianate details include narrow two-over-two windows with arched moldings and shutters, small eave brackets, denticulation below the cornice, and a projecting two-story portico with slender Doric columns and a cross-hatched wooden balustrade. Mature ash, pine, magnolia, and cedar trees surround the house. In 1891 the property passed to Adolph and Louisa Seelhorst, a nephew of the original owner and his wife, who lived there until 1944. It was listed for its architecture as an excellent, highly intact example of late nineteenth-century Victorian design and one of the finest Italianate buildings in Brenham.","period_of_significance":"c.1880","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; the form notes a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.605625-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/9706/40970659/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90000470.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000470/dabf2ceef6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000470/dabf2ceef6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seelhorstcolor.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seelhorstcolor.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970659","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002491"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/washington-county/seelhorst-w-e-house-90000470/"}
