It sits on a long lot running a full block to Church Street and has three contributing outbuildings.","why_significant":"It is considered locally significant under Criterion C as an excellent, well-preserved example of a Victorian L-plan house in Brenham. Its design combines Queen Anne, Eastlake and Italianate influences. It also relates to the local context of community development and regional expansion, 1870-1941.","narrative":"Built about 1880 by the Will Reichardt family, who ran a hardware store in downtown Brenham, this one-story frame house at 609 South Austin Street is a Victorian L-plan dwelling, since modified to a rectangular plan. It has clapboard siding, a hipped roof, a brick pier-and-beam foundation and narrow 2/2 windows. A polygonal bay with a center gable dominates the west facade, and an inset porch has chamfered columns and a sawn balustrade. Double front doors carry Eastlake trim. Its design blends Queen Anne massing, Italianate windows and Eastlake detail. In 1929 T.A. Low II bought it for his son T.A. Low III, later appointed local postmaster in 1933. Interior changes included lowered ceilings and added bedrooms, but the exterior was little altered apart from a metal porch canopy. Three outbuildings contribute to the property. It was listed for its architecture as one of Brenham's finest Victorian L-plan houses, with a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"c.1880","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as being in good condition with a high degree of integrity; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.39664-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/9706/40970655/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90000455.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000455/c3655b1c4a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000455/c3655b1c4a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reichardtlowhouse1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reichardtlowhouse1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970655","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000829"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/washington-county/reichardt-low-house-90000455/"}
