The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The depot is significant under Criterion A for its role in linking the Brenham area to broader markets for local goods through rail transportation. It also meets Criterion C as a functional, utilitarian railroad building with simple office space and large loading areas. It is one of two surviving properties in Brenham associated with the railroads.","narrative":"Built around 1915 at 306 South Market Street, this red brick freight depot served the railroad line running through south Brenham. It has two parts: a two-story eastern section with paired double-hung wooden windows, limestone stringcourses and corbelled corner pendants influenced by the Prairie School, and a one-story western section with five large wooden overhead doors under limestone lintels. Goods arrived by rail on the north side and were stored briefly before being loaded onto trucks on the south side. Office space was small but placed so employees could supervise loading and handle paperwork. Brenham sat at the junction of two major railroads, which made it a center of commerce in Central Texas, and the depot helped connect local producers to wider markets. Its plain, functional design is nearly identical in plan to the freight depot of the competing Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe line. It is one of two surviving railroad-related properties in the city and is now used as offices.","period_of_significance":"c.1915-1941","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Privately owned, in good condition, recently renovated and currently in use as office space.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.860845-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/89/9706/40970689/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90000453.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04000154","name":"Brenham Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/brenham-downtown-historic-district-04000154/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970689","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000831"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/washington-county/southern-pacific-railroad-freight-depot-90000453/"}
