It is the largest and most architecturally significant church in the city and reflects the period revival emphasis of the 1930s. It retains a high degree of integrity and is tied to Brenham's community development and regional expansion period.","narrative":"Built in 1935-36 at 701 Church Street in Brenham, St. Mary's Catholic Church is a brick building on a basilica plan with limestone detailing, a terra-cotta tile roof and a three-story bell tower at the northwest corner. Its west facade has three levels of arches, including twelve small arches that each hold a statue of an apostle. The style is Renaissance Revival with German Rundbogenstil influence, visible in the rounded arches. Inside are a five-bay nave, barrel-vaulted side aisles, Italian marble altars and oak pews and paneling. The tower holds the main bell from the 1894 church. San Antonio architect Leo M.J. Dielmann, who designed many mostly Catholic churches, drew on period revival and Germanic influences from his early training. The church replaced a small frame church of about 1870 on land donated by local bankers. It is the largest and most architecturally significant church in Brenham and the only one of its style, and it retains a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"1935-36","architect_builder":"Architect: Dielmann, Leo M.J.; Builder: Dielmann Construction Co.
