Wetmore.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is a strong example of Classical Revival architecture, with giant order columns, a symmetrical facade and a denticulated cornice. It is one of only two major institutional buildings in Brenham in that style, the other being Brenham High School. It also retains a high degree of integrity and relates to the local context of community development and regional expansion from 1870 to 1941.","narrative":"Facing west on a large corner lot in downtown Brenham, this one-story post office and federal building was completed in 1915 and still serves as a post office. Red load-bearing brick walls rest on a concrete foundation and support a hipped sheet metal roof. The plan is a T, formed by a rectangular main block with square appendages at the northwest and southwest corners. The seven-bay west facade is dominated by six giant order columns with Ionic capitals set into a recessed portico, with a limestone stringcourse and denticulated cornice above. Its design is credited to Treasury architect James A. Wetmore, and it resembles the post office built in Belton, Texas, at the same time. The building was recognized for its Classical Revival architecture, which shows Georgian Revival influence. It is one of only two major institutional buildings in Brenham in this style, the other being the high school. It remains in excellent condition and retains a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"1915","architect_builder":"Wetmore, James A.","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as being in excellent condition and still used as a post office.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.787116-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/9706/40970619/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90000449.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000449/377ed94559-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000449/377ed94559-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:U.S._Post_Office-Federal_Building.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:U.S._Post_Office-Federal_Building.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970619","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002494"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/washington-county/us-post-office-federal-building-brenham-90000449/"}
