The mill was constructed in 1850.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the mill is significant under Criterion A for industry as an example of an important industry in Huntingdon County. It is presented as a good example of a late nineteenth to early twentieth century mill site and an example of the continuing use of an early milling site, with an unusual twentieth-century water wheel.","narrative":"Built in 1850 in the middle of Saltillo Borough, a small rural town in southern Huntingdon County surrounded by steep mountains, the Hudson Grist Mill is a frame building with clapboard siding on a coursed rubble stone foundation. It measures 36 by 28 feet, rises two and a half stories, and carries a centrally placed gable-roofed fourth story housing the elevator head beneath a metal roof. The site traces back to 1797, when Henry Hubbell, the pioneer landowner, built grist and saw mills on North Spring Creek powered by a log dam and an overshot wheel. Ownership passed through the Hudson family, then to the Weavers, who installed modern milling equipment in 1905, and to Crotsley, who added a steel water wheel and a kerosene engine around 1920. The mill is regarded as significant for industry in Huntingdon County. Its remaining equipment, including a cockle machine, illustrates a long-running milling operation at an early site.","period_of_significance":"1850-1939","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Much of the milling equipment was removed in the early 1950s; the water wheel remains in badly deteriorated condition.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:38.129857-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/90000390.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000390/ee4e60e178-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000390/ee4e60e178-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Generic1139","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hudson_Grist_Mill_east_and_south_sides.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Generic1139</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hudson_Grist_Mill_east_and_south_sides.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71993043","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_Grist_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5928680"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/huntingdon-county/hudson-grist-mill-90000390/"}
