Moore, with a well-house and a buggy shed on the lot.","why_significant":"The house is significant for its architecture, as a simple vernacular dwelling with Victorian detailing that influenced other Webster buildings after 1886. It is also significant for its link to Walter E. Moore, a lawyer and legislator who became Speaker of the North Carolina House in 1901 and later a superior court judge.","narrative":"Built in 1886 on Main Street in Webster, this one-and-one-half-story weatherboard house was the home of Walter E. Moore, a young lawyer who lived there for thirty-six years. It has a T-plan, a hipped porch with turned posts and sawnwork brackets, a central front gable, and window headings with modest pedimental trim. Inside are a pressed tin ceiling in the stair hall, beadboard wainscot, and an oak mantel with overmantel mirror. A well-house and buggy shed from the same era remain behind the house. The house influenced local building: its window moldings, T-plan and front gable were echoed in the Webster Methodist Church and several other area houses. Moore served in the state legislature, sponsored a 1893 bill that led to teacher-training departments in state high schools, and was elected Speaker of the House in 1901. He later served as a superior court judge. The house remains in residential use and retains its original character.","period_of_significance":"1886-1922","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: vernacular Victorian","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; the house and outbuildings have been refurbished by the current owners and the house is described as little changed since construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:48.702383-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7209/47720942/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/90000322.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000322/23d8f75f64-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000322/23d8f75f64-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Warren LeMay from Cincinnati, OH, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walter_E._Moore_House,_Webster,_NC_(39650296463).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Warren LeMay from Cincinnati, OH, United States</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walter_E._Moore_House,_Webster,_NC_(39650296463).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720942","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_E._Moore_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19987166"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/jackson-county/moore-walter-e-house-90000322/"}
