It embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction under Criterion C. It represents modestly decorated First Period building in Wenham in the early 18th century.","narrative":"Located at 114 Cedar Street in Wenham, this five-bay, 2 1/2 story house dates from about 1699 to 1725 and is tied to James Friend, a carpenter and hewer of timber. In 1699 the town granted Friend liberty to cut timber for shingles, perhaps for building the house. It began as a double-cell, central-chimney dwelling, with a lean-to added before 1738. In the 19th century the rear was raised to a full two stories and the roof rebuilt. Around 1850 an Italianate staircase replaced the removed chimney. In the early 20th century the house was moved back from the road and covered with stucco. Inside, an exposed late First Period frame survives, including a chamfered chimney post, flat-chamfered ceiling beams, splayed corner posts, tie beams and original attic rafters. Mid-18th-century cyma-molded cornices also remain. The house was listed for its well-preserved early framing, which represents modest First Period construction in Wenham.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; condition stated as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.899878-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7900/63790030/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000268.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000268/e226d633ed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000268/e226d633ed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Friend_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Friend_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790030","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Friend_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715626"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/friend-james-house-90000268/"}
