It also preserves original 17th century finish behind later wall covering and an early staircase with Renaissance-inspired balusters. The raised chimney girt shows how carpenters handled enlargements from one room to two.","narrative":"Located at 162 Cherry Street in Wenham, this clapboarded house began as a single-room dwelling possibly as early as 1658 and grew to a two-room plan in 1695/6. It is five bays wide and two and a half stories tall, with a steep roof, a rebuilt central chimney, a Greek Revival doorway, a lean-to and later side wings. Inside, a c. 1658 summer beam with quarter-round chamfers and lamb's tongue stops is a good example of a relatively rare type. Evidence of a raised chimney girt shows how the builders handled the enlargement. Original 17th century finish survives behind later paneling, and the staircase with short turned balusters is an early use of Renaissance-inspired form. Rev. Antipas Newman, Wenham's second minister, owned the land from 1658 to 1672 and may have built the house. William Fiske Jr. owned it by 1695/6. A barn with 18th century framing also contributes to the property.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"1st Period core with 2nd Period vernacular exterior; Greek Revival frontispiece","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; present use is residence, as it was originally.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.454245-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/54/7900/63790054/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000267.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000267/caf5111e45-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000267/caf5111e45-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newman-Fiske-Dodge_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newman-Fiske-Dodge_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790054","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newman%E2%80%93Fiske%E2%80%93Dodge_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715771"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/newman-fiske-dodge-house-90000267/"}
