It is a 2 1/2 story, five-bay, central-chimney clapboard residence on about one acre.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the original First Period frame keeps integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship, and represents a larger group of simple late First Period houses (Criterion C). Evidence of a possible overhanging second story makes it likely to yield information on joinery practices among Wenham craftsmen (Criterion D).","narrative":"This house at 26 Maple Street in Wenham began around 1700 as a single-cell, timber-framed dwelling and grew over time. Rooms on the left were added in the early to mid 18th century, and the house was later extended to a full two-room depth under a raised, symmetrical gable roof. A rear addition and garage date to about 1970. Today it presents a five-bay clapboard front with a central chimney and an enclosed one-story entrance porch. Inside, the right-hand room and chamber hold the main First Period features: chamfered summer beams with lamb's tongue and tapered stops, flared corner posts, and rafters from an earlier purlin roof visible in the attic. Thick front and end walls may conceal evidence of a former overhang. Later Federal trim appears on the stair and mantelpieces. It was listed for the quality of its early frame and for what that frame may reveal about local joinery practices.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period (late Second Period vernacular exterior appearance)","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; present use is residence, as it was originally.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.766451-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/41/7898/63789841/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000264.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000264/9141efdb0a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000264/9141efdb0a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Solomon_Kimball_House,_Wenham_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Solomon_Kimball_House,_Wenham_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789841","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Kimball_House_(Wenham,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7558688"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/kimball-solomon-house-90000264/"}
