Its east room joists with barefaced soffit tenons are an exceptional example of a rare late 17th century technique. Its form, a one-cell house moved and joined to another, may be a rare identifiable example of what happened to many damaged or single-cell First Period buildings.","narrative":"Located at 140 Mill Road in North Andover, this clapboarded, center-chimney house dates to about 1709, with a possible 1690s origin. It combines two First Period single-cell halves joined at the chimney. The east end is believed original to the site and was probably built by Ebenezer Frie (Frye) III after his 1708 marriage. The west end is reputed to have been moved here in the 1760s, perhaps after a fire, and family tradition links it to an early Carlton garrison house, though no evidence confirms this. The exposed first-floor frame shows chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops, jowled posts, and unusual barefaced soffit tenon joists, a rare late 17th century technique. The house passed to the Tucker family after 1813. Charles W. Tucker, an MIT graduate, set a granite step from the demolished Rogers Building at the entrance. It was listed for its well-preserved early frame and construction details.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Recorded in good condition and in residential use; the rear lean-to was rebuilt in the 20th century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.206239-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/7900/63790018/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000251.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000251/74ce8f87d4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000251/74ce8f87d4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthAndoverMA_CarltonFrieTuckerHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthAndoverMA_CarltonFrieTuckerHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790018","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlton-Frie-Tucker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5042947"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/carlton-frie-tucker-house-90000251/"}
