This supports its significance for architecture (Criterion C). Because the earliest frame is now boxed in, it may also yield more information about First Period building practices (Criterion D).","narrative":"Located at 300 Main Street in Lynnfield, this house began around 1700 as a two-and-a-half-story half house with a lean-to and a chimney at its west end. A western section was added in the early 18th century, and the post-1730 date of that addition is shown by the unfinished longitudinal summer beam in the first-floor room. The result is a five-bay, central-chimney saltbox with clapboard siding, a reconstructed cove cornice and a Greek Revival doorway. Its importance lies in the surviving early fabric. The east side has chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops, and the attic holds original rafters, collar beams and vertical planking. Four original riven clapboards remain attached to the planks beneath the gable peak, a rare survival of First Period exterior finish. Much of the earliest frame is hidden behind later boxing and panels, so it may still reveal more about how such houses were built. The original builder is unknown, and the house is named for the family that lived there for most of the 18th century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period / saltbox","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Recorded in good condition and in use as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.514246-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/7898/63789861/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000240.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000240/bb4ead284e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000240/bb4ead284e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henfield_House,_Lynnfield_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henfield_House,_Lynnfield_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789861","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henfield_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5714173"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/henfield-house-90000240/"}
