It is also one of two through-hall-plan houses in the survey, and its exposed but undecorated frame reflects First Period practice. It is further tied to Wallace Nutting's 1915 restoration and his chain of historic houses.","narrative":"Built around 1724 by Richard Hazen Jr., this brick house at 8 Groveland Street in Haverhill sits on a high bank overlooking the Merrimack River. It is seven bays wide, one room deep and two and a half stories tall, with a central through hall and chimneys at each end. The walls are laid in English bond with corbelled string courses and segmental arches over the windows. Brick construction of this period is rare; it is one of only three First Period brick examples in the survey and one of two through-hall-plan houses. Notes by an earlier owner indicate that the oak ceiling beams were originally exposed, though never decorated. In 1915 Wallace Nutting restored the house, added the rear brick ell, installed leaded casement windows and put in new wood sheathing around the fireplaces. Although that work removed early finishes, it made the house part of Nutting's chain of historic houses, whose interiors he photographed and published.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Richard Hazen Jr. (builder); Wallace Nutting restoration ca. 1915, with architect Henry Charles Dean","architectural_style":"First Period/Transitional","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, and the present use is residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.259646-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/7900/63790076/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000226.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000226/0b0af06813-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000226/0b0af06813-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hazen-Spiller_House,_Haverhill_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hazen-Spiller_House,_Haverhill_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790076","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazen-Spiller_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5688229"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/hazen-spiller-house-90000226/"}
