Plank framing was an infrequently used construction option in Massachusetts Bay. A mill-sawn frame is unusual in a First-Period building, and the mix of chamfered and unchamfered exposed framing is an unusual transitional feature.","narrative":"This house at 93 King Street in Groveland is a central-chimney, plank-framed dwelling of two and a half stories, with an asymmetrical five-bay facade. A local history says Joseph Hardy built it around 1720, though a late 1720s date is suggested because Hardy did not marry until 1729. Its walls are framed with vertical oak planks showing sawmill marks, and the interior has exposed summer beams with bevel chamfers and lamb's tongue or taper stops, along with exposed braces in the second-floor chambers. A bladed scarf joint in the front plate shows it began with a two-cell plan. A lean-to was added in the later eighteenth century and enlarged to full size in the early twentieth. The house was recognized because mill-sawn plank framing was uncommon in First-Period construction in Massachusetts, and because its mix of chamfered and unchamfered members is an unusual transitional feature. Hardy's descendants lived there until the mid-nineteenth century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Joseph Hardy (builder per local history); architect unknown","architectural_style":"First Period","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; condition described as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.554934-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/7900/63790000/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000219.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000219/cdd122bad2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000219/cdd122bad2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GrovelandMA_JosephHardyHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GrovelandMA_JosephHardyHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790000","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Hardy_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6283795"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/hardy-joseph-house-90000219/"}
