A brick dated 1672 was reportedly found during a 1910 chimney replacement, which could make its possible integral lean-to the earliest known in New England if confirmed. Its segmentally arched rear doorway is a rare example of decorative First Period carpentry.","narrative":"Set one foot from Concord Street in a rural, isolated part of Gloucester not far from the Essex River, this 2 1/2-story shingled house began as a single-cell late 17th century building made up of the left-hand rooms and chimney bay. A file of rooms was added on the right in the 18th century, and early 20th century remodeling for hospital use brought a full lean-to dormer and a small rear shed. Inside, the left-hand room keeps a chamfered summer beam, original clay plaster, and a rare segmentally arched rear doorway. The attic shows evidence of a purlin roof with hewn purlins. A workman reportedly found a brick dated 1672 when the central chimney was replaced in 1910. If deed research confirms that date and the lean-to proves original, the house would predate the earliest known integral lean-to in New England by 11 years. The Proctor and Bray families are traditionally associated with the site.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period core with 19th and early 20th century Colonial vernacular exterior","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Recorded in 1985 as in good condition and in use as a residence; renovations were under way, with finishes recently removed from some rooms.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.225474-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/34/7900/63790034/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000213.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000213/a7ee69f746-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000213/a7ee69f746-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GloucesterMA_EllaProctorHerrickHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GloucesterMA_EllaProctorHerrickHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790034","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ella_Proctor_Herrick_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5364559"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/herrick-ella-proctor-house-90000213/"}
