It began as a single-cell First Period building and was later expanded.","why_significant":"The house keeps some of its First Period frame, including chamfered posts and girts that closely resemble those in the James Putnam, Jr., House in Danvers. It may have been built by the same carpenter. Further study could yield information about First Period construction and regional building trends. It is considered eligible under Criterion D.","narrative":"Set on 1.61 acres at 592 Maple Street in Danvers, this two and one half story clapboarded house dates to about 1722, when Samuel White may have built it. It began as a single-cell building, and rooms were added to the left of the chimney bay during the First Period. Around 1850 a rear file of rooms was added, the front wall was raised, and the roof was rebuilt with broad eaves and returns, giving the house a late Greek Revival vernacular look. Inside, flat-chamfered posts and girts with triangular stops survive in parts of the frame. The post in the left-hand chamber closely matches posts in the James Putnam, Jr., House in Danvers, suggesting a shared carpenter. Many timbers have been replaced, and the original roof framing and central chimney are gone. The house was listed for its potential to show how First Period buildings were constructed. A late 19th-century barn survives from earlier farm outbuildings.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period core with Late Greek Revival vernacular exterior","criteria":["D"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, and the property is in residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.611896-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/9/7898/63789809/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000204.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000204/04b94370e9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000204/04b94370e9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:White-Preston_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:White-Preston_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789809","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-Preston_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7994266"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/white-preston-house-90000204/"}
