Its single-cell plan with integral lean-to is representative of many First Period buildings, and its low end wall girt at the chimney end was chosen by only a few carpenters. The plaster cove cornice is one of three remaining in the study area.","narrative":"This house at 111 Locust Street in Danvers began about 1700 as a half house with an integral lean-to, built by the farmer Joshua Rea. Around 1725 a second cell with its own lean-to was added on the east. The oak frame of the original west section is exposed, while the later pine frame is boxed. Inside, the left-hand room has a chamfered summer beam with lamb's tongue stops and a post with a slot for a door bolt. A low end wall girt survives beside the stairs. The facade carries an original plaster cove cornice, one of only three remaining in the study area. The right-hand room has Second Period raised paneling and Federal finishes. In the 1930s the house was sensitively restored with advice from Dr. Arthur Stone. It was listed for its First Period frame and surviving plaster cornice, which show the evolution of early Essex County houses.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Joshua Rea, farmer (builder); no architect","architectural_style":"First Period","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.634527-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/7899/63789985/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000202.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000202/039db2eab6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000202/039db2eab6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rea_Putnam_Fowler_House_(1650).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rea_Putnam_Fowler_House_(1650).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789985","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rea_Putnam_Fowler_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7300146"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/fowler-rea-putnam-house-90000202/"}
