It shows how single-cell houses were enlarged and demoted to utilitarian ells. The main house is also tied to the Reverend John Chipman.","narrative":"At 634 Cabot Street in Beverly, Massachusetts, a late seventeenth-century single-cell house survives as the northern ell of a larger two-and-a-half-story Georgian dwelling. The older section, associated with Exercise Conant and dated c. 1695, has a three-bay front, a steep roof, and a large chimney at its junction with the main house. Inside, the single room measures about 12 by 19 feet and keeps its exposed oak frame, molded posts, chamfered summer beam and girts with lamb's tongue stops. The Reverend John Chipman acquired the property in 1715 and presumably built the larger main house for his parish duties and family of fifteen children. That house has a dentillated cornice, a fine doorway with fluted pilasters and a broken-arch pediment, and raised-field paneling in the north parlor. The property is significant because the original house remains nearly intact and shows how First Period houses were enlarged and reduced to utilitarian ells in the following period.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; main house built by the Reverend John Chipman","architectural_style":"First Period / Second Period","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; used as a residence; not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.516205-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/7900/63790056/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000199.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000199/c81bea0833-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000199/c81bea0833-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BeverlyMA_ExerciseConantHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BeverlyMA_ExerciseConantHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790056","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise_Conant_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5420024"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/conant-exercise-house-90000199/"}
