Its unusual transverse summer beam merits further study (Criterion D). Its growth into a full double-pile house in the Second Period is typical of early houses that were enlarged rather than rebuilt.","narrative":"Located at 271 Essex Street in Beverly, this two-and-a-half story, five-bay, clapboarded house with a central chimney began as a single-cell First Period dwelling to the right of the chimney. Features of the right front rooms suggest construction around 1700, though deed research pointed to 1671, and the date remains to be confirmed. A matching cell was added to the left of the chimney around 1725-30, and rear rooms and a new roof later doubled the house, leaving the chimney stack protruding through the front roof slope. Inside, the original room has an exposed, chamfered pine frame, a transverse summer beam with lamb's tongue stops, and a wide fireplace. Vertical exterior sheathing and an unusual horizontal board may point to plank-frame construction. The house is associated with Livermore Whittredge Sr. and Jr., members of the Committee of Correspondence and privateers during the Revolution. It was listed for its early framing and its illustration of how First Period houses grew.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; present use is residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.112918-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/7898/63789819/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000197.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000197/22398a4c63-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000197/22398a4c63-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BeverlyMA_WilliamLivermoreHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BeverlyMA_WilliamLivermoreHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789819","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Livermore_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716041"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/livermore-william-house-90000197/"}
