The oldest section dates to about 1700, with a second section added about 1720 and extensive 1920s additions.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant for its frames from two successive periods, including transverse first-floor summer beams supported by molded post heads and story posts, and an overhanging second story. It also notes later association with 20th-century artists, musicians and architects through its transformation into a country estate.","narrative":"Located on Hull Street in Beverly, this clapboarded two-story house with a central chimney and lobby entrance began as a single-cell dwelling, perhaps around 1700. About 1720 a two-story addition was made beside the chimney bay, and a rear leanto was added later. The earlier section has an overhanging second story supported by molded ends of the transverse members, with chamfered and lamb's-tongue-stopped summer and tie beams resting on posts with molded heads. The later section has quirk-beaded framing, a longitudinal first-floor summer beam, and a principal-and-purlin pine roof. Around 1920 Quincy Adams Shaw McKean and his wife, the artist Margaret Sargent, hired Boston architect Joseph Delano Leland III to turn the house into a country estate. He added a quadrangle of vernacular revival buildings, including a medieval hall, chapel, bedrooms and guest cottage, around a courtyard and pool. The house was listed for its two framing periods and this later artistic association.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown for the original house; Joseph Delano Leland III of Leland and Larson designed the 1920s alterations and additions","architectural_style":"First Period / Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; in present use as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.069289-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/7900/63790036/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000196.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000196/616a8f1a74-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000196/616a8f1a74-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BeverlyMA_SamuelCorningHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BeverlyMA_SamuelCorningHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790036","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Corning_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411166"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/corning-samuel-house-90000196/"}
