It was built in three phases and is a First Period house.","why_significant":"The house retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship in its two surviving late First Period frame phases (Criterion C). Evidence of an original single-cell house with an integral lean-to may provide information on a rarely surviving early house form (Criterion D). The two phases show consecutive late First Period frame decoration.","narrative":"Located at 184 Hale Street in Beverly, this two-and-a-half story, five-bay house has a central chimney and clapboard walls. A carved date of 1702 on a front story post marks the original single-cell house, which had an integral lean-to. A second cell was added to the left of the chimney late in the First Period, and a separate lean-to was later attached to it. In the nineteenth or twentieth century the rear roof was raised with a shed dormer and a small gabled ell was added. Inside, the two phases show different frame decoration: bevel chamfers with taper stops in the first phase and quirk-beaded framing in the second. Attic rafters and tie beams preserve evidence of the original lean-to form, which survives rarely. After 1760 the house was associated with Captain Joseph Rea, a militia captain and Continental army officer who took part in the 1776 attack on Trenton. The house was listed for its architectural integrity and its potential to yield information.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Condition recorded as good; present use is residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.156141-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/83/7899/63789983/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000195.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000195/d6b6278f19-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000195/d6b6278f19-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Captain_John_Thorndike_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Captain_John_Thorndike_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789983","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capt._John_Thorndike_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5036446"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/thorndike-capt-john-house-90000195/"}
