It combines late First Period framing with early Second Period interior finish. It also keeps much of its rural setting at the end of a small lane.","narrative":"This 2 1/2 story, central-chimney frame house stands at 137 Tuttle Lane in Stow, at the end of a small lane surrounded by woods. It is dated to about 1720-1730 on visual evidence. The clapboarded structure has an asymmetrical five-bay facade, a deep boxed overhanging cornice and a Federal door surround with half-length sidelights. A lean-to was added at the rear in the 18th century, with later additions in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Inside, the main first-floor rooms show exposed quirk-beaded summer beams and girts typical of late First Period framing, alongside early Second Period finish such as feather-edged sheathing, raised-field paneling and a bolection-molded fireplace. The original transitional staircase survives in the front lobby. The earliest known owner, Deacon Jacob Whitney, arrived in 1800 to work his wife's father's Walcott farm. The Walcotts came to Stow in 1735/36 and may have built the house then. The house was listed for its architectural integrity.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period (transitional First Period to early Second Period)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Recorded in good condition and in residential use; the form lists its present use as residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.821624-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/7907/63790785/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000183.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000183/6d30e1f007-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000183/6d30e1f007-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walcott-Whitney_House,_Stow_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walcott-Whitney_House,_Stow_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790785","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walcott-Whitney_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7961344"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/walcott-whitney-house-90000183/"}
