It faces south on a slight rise, set well back in an open field.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be significant under criterion D because its concealed sponge-painted sheathing and First Period frame could yield information about late First Period room decoration. It is also argued to be eligible under criterion C for its rare early stone chimney, a type apparently tied to a regional trend in western Middlesex County. It has a long association with the Tenney family, farmers in Stow from 1690 to the mid 1930s.","narrative":"Set well back from Taylor Road in Stow on a 5.7-acre open field, this farmhouse dates to about 1700-1725 and is a 2 1/2 story, clapboarded building with a central chimney, one room deep. A two-story ell projects from the right rear, and another ell extends from the left end, with a small lean-to tucked into the corner. The front door has a simple Greek Revival surround. Most early features are hidden, but visible evidence, including a beveled summer beam and fireplaces with side beehive ovens, points to a late transitional First Period date. Early sponge-painted sheathing survives beneath later coverings. The original stone chimney stack, changing to brick from the attic floor up, is unusual in this part of Massachusetts and resembles chimneys in Carlisle and elsewhere in Stow. The house was listed for this chimney and for the information its concealed finishes could provide. The Tenney family farmed here from 1690 to the mid 1930s.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period / Federal updating","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good; the property is in present use as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.243494-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/9/7904/63790409/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000181.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000181/7aee4dd0ef-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000181/7aee4dd0ef-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StowMA_TenneyHomestead.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StowMA_TenneyHomestead.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790409","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenney_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7700280"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/tenney-homestead-90000181/"}
