It sits on 1.3 acres with a 19th-century barn.","why_significant":"The form argues the house is an excellent example of a transitional First Period house that retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship and setting (Criterion C). Its intact front stair balustrade is a rare survival of a common late First Period feature. The second-floor longitudinal summer beams combined with a common-rafter roof are an unusual framing method that may yield information on early 18th-century framing (Criterion D).","narrative":"Built around 1726, this five-bay, 2 1/2-story clapboarded house on Treaty Elm Lane in Stow is a transitional First Period dwelling with a central chimney. It was probably built by Hezekiah Hapgood, who married in 1724 and settled on the western part of his father's farm in 1726. The Hapgoods stayed a prominent farming family in Stow into the 20th century, and the house was associated with the same family for about two hundred years. Inside, beaded beams, exposed joists and a large original fireplace with the remains of a beehive oven survive. The original two-landing stairway keeps its balustrade, a rare survival of a common late First Period feature. The second floor combines longitudinal summer beams with a common-rafter roof, an unusual framing method that may help explain early 18th-century building practices. A lean-to and a one-story ell were added, and 1960s restoration work recovered the casement windows, clapboards and chimney.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Probably built by Hezekiah Hapgood","architectural_style":"First Period (transitional)","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Good condition; restored by the present owner and still used as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.77509-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/83/7907/63790783/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000180.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000180/847f25a2f2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000180/847f25a2f2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StowMA_HapgoodHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StowMA_HapgoodHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790783","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hapgood_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5651608"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hapgood-house-90000180/"}
