Its second-floor longitudinal summer beams are an unusual Massachusetts framing option worth further study. Its long Gardner family ownership also illustrates the multi-generation family farms of New England.","narrative":"Addington Gardner House, at 128 Hollis Street in Sherborn, is a 2 1/2-story, five-bay clapboarded farmhouse organized around a central chimney. It dates to about 1730 and was probably built by Addington Gardner, who came to Sherborn around that time. The house is now two rooms deep, though it may originally have been one room deep. Its main facade has a block modillion cornice and a Colonial Revival door surround with a projecting pediment. A one-story ell was added about 1800, with a carriage shed attached. Inside, quirk-beaded longitudinal summer beams on both floors combine with early Second Period finish, including bolection molding and raised-field paneling at the fireplaces, to support the c. 1730 date. The second-floor summer beams are an unusual framing choice in Massachusetts. The Gardner family farmed the land until 1911, when it was sold to dairy farmer Ward J. Parks, which makes the property an example of multi-generation New England family farms.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Probably built by Addington Gardner; architect unknown","architectural_style":"Late First Period (transitional)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; condition described as fair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.723558-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/7910/63791064/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000179.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000179/a6a4d5b0ad-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000179/a6a4d5b0ad-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Addington_Gardner_House_-_Sherborn,_Massachusetts_-_DSC02983.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Addington_Gardner_House_-_Sherborn,_Massachusetts_-_DSC02983.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791064","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addington_Gardner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4681180"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/gardner-addington-house-90000179/"}
