It is believed to be the oldest house in Newton and the only building there found to have First Period characteristics. It is also tied to the Hammond family, early settlers of the area.","narrative":"Set at 9 Old Orchard Road in Chestnut Hill, this Newton farmhouse is believed to be the oldest house in the community and the only building there so far found to have First Period characteristics. Its oldest section, built between about 1700 and 1720, began as a one-room house with an end chimney and a chestnut frame. A second room was added soon after, producing a two-room central-chimney plan. A rear lean-to followed between about 1750 and 1800, and wings and ells were added in 1930. Exposed beams in the early rooms show beveled chamfers with lamb's tongue stops, and the first-floor fireplace is large, with a beehive oven. Joseph Everett Chandler restored the house in the 1920s, and Harold Field Kellog designed the 1930 additions, typical of Colonial Revival work on early houses. The land was first held by Thomas Hammond, who settled in Newton in the 1640s, and the Hammond family farmed it for nearly two centuries.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Joseph Everett Chandler (1920s restoration architect); Harold Field Kellog (1930 additions)","architectural_style":"First Period","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as good; in present use as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.980696-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/3/7904/63790403/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000175.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000175/a6770d06cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000175/a6770d06cd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hammond_House,_Chestnut_Hill_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hammond_House,_Chestnut_Hill_MA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86001756","name":"Old Chestnut Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/old-chestnut-hill-historic-district-86001756/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790403","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammond_House_(Newton,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5645847"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hammond-house-90000175/"}
