It has been moved from its original site, and the date of the move is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is argued to retain integrity of design and workmanship in its transitional First Period frame under Criterion C. Removing the central chimney during the remodelling is cited as a common way of converting a center-chimney house into a center-hall Georgian house. Notable features include beaded summer beams, brick nogging and rare marbleized raised-field paneling.","narrative":"This two-and-a-half-story, five-bay clapboarded house at 33 Riverhurst Road in Billerica dates to about 1725 and was probably built by Deacon Samuel Hill, who inherited the family farm in 1695 and died in 1755. It was originally one room deep, and a rear lean-to was added later. Around 1840 the house was remodelled in the Georgian manner. The central chimney was removed and replaced by a central stair and two interior chimneys between the front and lean-to rooms, a typical way of turning a center-chimney house into a center-hall one. Inside, late First Period features survive, including exposed summer beams with quirk beading, horizontal sheathing, brick nogging in the end walls and original rear wall, and sawmill-sawn rising braces. A second-floor chamber also holds rare marbleized raised-field paneling, with nine panels in three ranks. These surviving features of design and workmanship are the basis for its listing under Criterion C.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Probably built by Deacon Samuel Hill; architect unknown","architectural_style":"First Period (remodelled to Georgian ca. 1840)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; in use as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.024299-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/7907/63790775/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000165.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000165/c729faa091-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000165/c729faa091-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BillericaMA_DeaconSamuelHillHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BillericaMA_DeaconSamuelHillHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790775","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deacon_Samuel_Hill_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5245039"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hill-deacon-samuel-house-90000165/"}
