It is also a good example of typical 18th-century farmhouse construction in Swansea. It meets Criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1768, this 1½-story cape with a gambrel roof, central brick chimney and double-pile plan stands at 1035 Gardner's Neck Road in South Swansea. Samuel Gardner the younger received the northern part of his father's farm and built the house after marrying Elizabeth Anthony in 1767; the couple had 13 children. His father and a partner, Ralph Chapman, had bought the land from the Rev. Ebenezer Brenton in 1693, when the area was wilderness. The Gardner family drove much of the 18th and early 19th-century development of Gardner's Neck, building at least five houses along the main road. The house has wood-shingle walls, 6/6 sash, three facade dormers with heavy gabled hoods and a one-story north wing, all 19th-century changes reflecting continual use. Farmland dominated the Neck until a railroad station arrived in 1865 and summer and suburban houses followed. This cape survives from the limited 18th-century settlement and is valued for its architecture and its link to early settlement.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; condition described as good; the house has not been moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.750288-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/7896/63789697/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000068.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000068/54a494f557-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000068/54a494f557-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SwanseaMA_SamuelGardnerHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SwanseaMA_SamuelGardnerHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789697","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Gardner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411461"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/gardner-samuel-house-90000068/"}
