Hope Bay, Gardners Neck, Swansea, Massachusetts, built in 1895 to designs by William Beattie for David M. Anthony.","why_significant":"The house is an example of Swansea's late 19th-century resort construction in the Queen Anne style. It was one of the earliest summer estates on Gardners Neck, built by a wealthy Fall River businessman who helped change the area from agricultural to residential. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","narrative":"Bay Point is a shingled Queen Anne summer house at 98 Bay Point Avenue, set on a large waterfront property on Mt. Hope Bay in Swansea. Built in 1895 for David M. Anthony, a wealthy Fall River businessman and a founder of the Swift Meat Packing Company, it was one of the earliest summer estates on Gardners Neck. Anthony and other Fall River businessmen helped turn the neck from farmland into a residential area. The house is asymmetrical, two and three stories tall, with a hipped roof, two crossed gables, corner towers, a one-story wrap porch on the water side, and a curved gable end with a porte-cochere. Wood shingles contrast with stone at the base of a corner tower and at the porte-cochere. A two-stall garage stands on the grounds. The property was listed for its representation of the town's late 19th-century resort architecture and for its Queen Anne design, which retains good integrity. The architect, William Beattie, may have been a Fall River granite dealer of that name.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"William Beattie","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is as a residence; basic original fabric in excellent condition as of the form; a portion of the porch was enclosed at an unknown date.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.956571-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/7896/63789659/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000059.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000059/bda98a42b0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000059/bda98a42b0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SwanseaMA_DavidMAnthonyHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SwanseaMA_DavidMAnthonyHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789659","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_M._Anthony_House_(Swansea,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5236886"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/anthony-david-m-house-90000059/"}
