They also reflect Newton's early 20th century suburban growth, which filled in established areas as well as new subdivisions.","narrative":"Two houses at 231 and 237 Mill Street in Newtonville were built in 1914 as a matched pair by the Boston architects Derby & Robinson. Number 237, at the corner of Upland Road, is a five-bay, two-story Neo-Federal house with a low hip roof, clapboard siding, a modillion cornice and a fanlighted center entry. Number 231 is a three-bay gambrel-roof cottage in the sturdier Georgian Revival manner, with pedimented dormers and a center entry. Both sit on low terraces among mature trees. Boston lawyer F. Lincoln Peirce and his wife commissioned the houses on land bought from the heirs of Governor William Claflin. The pair was featured in The House Beautiful in December 1915, which urged suburban builders to choose traditional forms. The houses are valued as well-detailed Colonial Revival design and as evidence of early 20th century suburban infill in Newton. They retain their original design, materials and setting, and are still used as homes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Derby & Robinson","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (237 Mill Street Neo-Federal; 231 Mill Street Georgian Revival)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is listed as excellent with no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.187354-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/7915/63791572/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000041.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000041/0c0d9f8cc0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000041/0c0d9f8cc0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:F._Lincoln_Pierce_House_at_237_Mill_St,_Newton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:F._Lincoln_Pierce_House_at_237_Mill_St,_Newton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791572","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._Lincoln_Pierce_Houses","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5423956"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/pierce-f-lincoln-houses-90000041/"}
