It also represents Newton's early 20th century suburban growth, including infill of established areas. It meets criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built in 1913 at 85 Bigelow Road in West Newton, this 2 1/2 story stucco house is an example of the Craftsman style by the Boston architectural firm Chapman & Frazer. A slate hip roof curves over paired second-story windows, and two dormers repeat the curve. A pent roof on carved brackets crosses the facade and shelters a recessed entry with heavy Doric columns and leaded glass. A two-story wing with an overhanging second story extends to the right, and a once-open porch on the left has been enclosed. A matching detached garage stands to the north. George W. Eddy, the original owner, was a commissions merchant and later president of the C.F. Eddy Company, a coal, wood and hay business his father began in Newton in 1870. The house is valued as Newton's finest example of English Craftsman design and as a reflection of the city's early twentieth century suburban growth, with houses built in established areas as well as new subdivisions.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Chapman & Frazer","architectural_style":"Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential, same as original; condition is listed as excellent with no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.101994-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/90/7915/63791590/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000038.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000038/dd26839dcc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000038/dd26839dcc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_GeorgeWEddyHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_GeorgeWEddyHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791590","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Eddy_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5545597"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/eddy-george-w-house-90000038/"}
