It also represents the high end of Newton's suburban expansion during the 1920s growth decade. It is argued to meet criteria A and C.","narrative":"Putnam House, originally the Henry I. Harriman House, is a stucco-clad estate house at 825 Centre Street in Newton Corner. Built in 1916 from designs by John Barnard of Waban, it is a symmetrical, seven-bay, two-story building with a steeply pitched slate roof, multiple dormers and four chimney stacks. The entry has a balustraded Tuscan porch, and the rear elevation has a Corinthian balcony above a rusticated terrace. Harriman was a power company executive, a vice-president of the Boston Chamber of Commerce and a Newton alderman. The commission came early in Barnard's career and helped establish his reputation. Newton College of the Sacred Heart acquired the house in 1950, and Boston College took over the campus in 1974. The house was named for benefactor Roger Lowell Putnam in 1967. Its original grounds have been lost, so the listed area covers only the house and a 15-foot margin around it. It was recognized as an intact French Eclectic example and as a marker of Newton's 1920s suburban growth.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John Barnard","architectural_style":"French Eclectic","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as excellent; presently used as Boston College's alumnae center.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.408819-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/7916/63791646/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000028.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000028/b1225f31e5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000028/b1225f31e5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_I._Harriman_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_I._Harriman_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791646","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_I._Harriman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5723508"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/harriman-henry-i-house-90000028/"}
