Hayward and designed by Winchester architect Robert Coit.","why_significant":"The house is presented as an elaborate, well-preserved example of the Craftsman style by architect Robert Coit. It also represents Newton's early 20th century suburban growth, which filled in established areas and created new subdivisions. It also relates to Fred R. Hayward, a confectionery company executive.","narrative":"Built in 1912 at 1547 Centre Street in Newton Highlands, this large house was designed by Winchester architect Robert Coit, who practiced in the Boston area between 1892 and 1940. It is a 2 1/2 story stucco building under a slate hip roof. Two gables frame the facade, and one extends in lean-to fashion to enclose a glazed sunporch. The entry has three-quarter-length sidelights and a gabled roof, flanked by groups of four multi-pane windows. Colored diamond-pattern tiles in the gables and near the door enliven the plain facade. A matching two-car garage with twin gables sits to the rear. The house was built for Fred R. Hayward, son of Albert F. Hayward, who helped merge several small confectionery firms into the New England Confectionery Company in 1901. Fred became its factory manager and, in 1923, its president. The house is valued as a well-preserved Craftsman example and as a reflection of Newton's early 20th century suburban growth. It remains a residence in good condition with no recorded major alterations.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Robert Coit (architect)","architectural_style":"Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential, same as original; condition is good with no major alterations recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.472026-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/7915/63791592/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000025.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000025/160ad46c40-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000025/160ad46c40-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_FredRHaywardHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_FredRHaywardHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791592","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_R._Hayward_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5496109"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hayward-fred-r-house-90000025/"}
