Crimmins; the architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is presented as one of the finest Georgian Revival houses in Newton, notable for its massive size and brick construction. It also represents the city's early 20th century suburban growth, including infill of established areas and new subdivisions. It is also tied to development on West Newton Hill after Commonwealth Avenue was built.","narrative":"This brick house at 19 Dartmouth Street in West Newton was built in 1910-1911 for wool merchant Thomas A. Crimmins, who had owned the lot since at least 1907. It is an estate-quality example of the Georgian Revival style, with a nearly square 2½-story main block under a slate hip roof, a large rear wing, brick quoins and a modillion cornice. The Commonwealth Avenue side has projecting end pavilions and two monumental Tuscan columns, while the Dartmouth Street side has a four-column portico facing a curving drive. The brick is laid in Flemish bond, and a matching garage stands behind. The house was one of several large homes built on the south slope of West Newton Hill after Commonwealth Avenue was laid out. Crimmins lived there until 1940. The estate was acquired in 1960 for the Dominican Sisters and in 1966 became the residence of the Melkite Catholic bishop. It was listed for its architecture and its link to Newton's suburban growth.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (described in the text as Georgian Revival)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent, with no major alterations; present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.08303-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/7915/63791562/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90000021.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000021/42b18e5776-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90000021/42b18e5776-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_A_Crimmins_House,_Newton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_A_Crimmins_House,_Newton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791562","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_A._Crimmins_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7786856"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/crimmins-thomas-a-house-90000021/"}
