It is a wood-frame building in the Colonial Revival (gambrel) style; the architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is tied to the growth of the Vernon Street streetcar corridor as a stylish residential district on Vernon Hill in Worcester's ethnic East Side. It is also an unusually ornate, well-detailed example of the gambrel-roof three-decker form popular locally in the early 20th century. It meets criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1918 at 141 Vernon Street, this three-decker stands on the crest of Vernon Hill in Worcester's East Side. It is a wood-frame, side-hall-plan house covered in clapboard and shingle under a gambrel roof. Its asymmetrical facade has a three-tier porch built into a small gambrel portico, with Tuscan columns on the first level, shingled piers and a balustrade on the second, and a semicircular opening with a keystone on the third. A two-story bay with unusual 25-over-1 sash flanks the porch, long shed dormers sit on the roof, and the side walls have small rectangular and diamond-pattern lights. The house was listed for its ornate, finely detailed gambrel design and for its place in the development of fashionable multi-family housing along the Vernon Street streetcar corridor. George Fontaine, an inspector, was the first owner and lived here through 1930. Early tenants included a machinist, a timekeeper and a mixer, two of them employed at the Norton Company.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (Gambrel) Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Recorded in poor condition, with significant deterioration of some sheathing; present use is residential.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.700076-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/57/7932/63793257/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002447.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002447/70c93d3566-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002447/70c93d3566-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Fontaine_3_Decker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Fontaine_3_Decker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793257","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Fontaine_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5539336"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/fontaine-george-three-decker-89002447/"}
