Architect unknown.","why_significant":"It is tied to the early 20th century development of the Vernon Street corridor as a fashionable hilltop district that drew Irish white-collar and skilled blue-collar families. It is also a well-preserved, well-detailed early example of the gambrel-roof three-decker that later became very popular on Vernon Hill.","narrative":"Built around 1902 at 90 Vernon Street in Worcester, this gambrel-roofed three-decker reflects a wave of speculative multi-family housing along the Vernon Street electric streetcar corridor on Vernon Hill. Peter Baker, president of the Baker Lead Manufacturing Company, developed it and owned several neighboring houses and more than thirty others across the city. The stylish hilltop suburb attracted East Side Irish families leaving denser neighborhoods near downtown, and early tenants included a letter carrier, clerks, a machinist, a fireman and a lineman. Architecturally, it is an unusually well-preserved example of the gambrel-roof variant of Colonial Revival design. Features include a two-tier porch with Tuscan columns and spindle balustrades, a curved two-story bay, paired 6/1 windows in the gambrel face, an elliptical light at the apex, and bracketed cornice overhangs. Clad in clapboard with shingled bays, it retains its original character and is judged significant at the local level for its history and design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (Gambrel) Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Recorded in very good condition with no major alterations; present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.347267-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/7932/63793255/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002445.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002445/32e5b82342-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002445/32e5b82342-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peter_Baker_3_Decker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peter_Baker_3_Decker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793255","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Baker_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7172651"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/baker-peter-three-decker-89002445/"}
