It has always been used as residential housing.","why_significant":"It is significant as part of the early 20th-century eastward extension of a working-class, mostly French-Canadian neighborhood from the Wall Street area. It is also an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed example of one of only a handful of brick three-deckers built in Worcester.","narrative":"Located at 30 Thorne Street in Worcester, this brick three-decker was built around 1910 in the Queen Anne style. It follows the locally typical side-hall plan with a hip roof, and its asymmetrical front has an entry bay with a three-tier porch beside a three-story bay window. Porch details include turned posts, spindle balusters and small scroll brackets, and the windows are 2/2 and 1/1 sash. Brick was rarely used for three-deckers in Worcester, and few were built, so the building is notable for its material and for its excellent state of preservation, with no recorded major alterations. It also reflects neighborhood growth: multi-family housing spread eastward from the Wall Street area toward Plantation Street as French-Canadian families arrived seeking work. The first known owner, Arthur Provost, a bookkeeper, lived here through the 1920s. Early tenants included a casketmaker, a foreman and a machinist. It was listed for its local significance in settlement history and architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne style Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as very good, with no major alterations; present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.14101-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/7933/63793363/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002444.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002444/22da940eeb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002444/22da940eeb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_ArthurProvostThreeDecker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_ArthurProvostThreeDecker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793363","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Provost_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4800033"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/provost-arthur-three-decker-89002444/"}
