Architect unknown.","why_significant":"It is tied to the ethnic, working-class residential district that grew on the western slope of Vernon Hill on Worcester's East Side in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed double three-decker using Colonial Revival elements. It is considered significant at the local level under Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1908 at 25 Suffield Street in Worcester, this double three-decker held six rental apartments. Its first owner, Patrick McGuinness, was a plumber who lived nearby on Orne Street. The building went up as part of the development of Vernon Hill's lower western slope into a working-class, multi-family neighborhood. The area was first Irish and, to a lesser degree, Swedish, and by the 1920s Polish and Lithuanian families were moving in. Early tenants worked as machinists, a watchmaker, an electrician and a leatherworker, among other trades. Architecturally, the house is a carefully detailed use of Colonial Revival features. It has a symmetrical facade with a recessed three-tier porch, slender Tuscan columns, arched openings with keystones on the third tier, and shallow rounded bay windows. Wood clapboard is banded with wide shingle courses, and a shallow hip roof carries a bracketed cornice. It remains in very good condition with no major alterations and is still residential.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is very good, with no major alterations and no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.672108-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/7932/63793249/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002439.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002439/08031128a4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002439/08031128a4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_PatrickMcGuinnessThreeDecker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_PatrickMcGuinnessThreeDecker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793249","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_McGuinness_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7147162"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/mcguinness-patrick-three-decker-89002439/"}
