The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"It is argued to represent the multi-family housing of the ethnic, working-class Island neighborhood, which grew as industry developed along nearby railroad corridors. It is also a well-preserved example of one of only a handful of brick three-deckers built in Worcester. The form finds it significant at the local level under criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1888 at 24 Sigel Street, this brick three-decker sits in Worcester's Island neighborhood, a low-lying area south of the central city. The area began as an Irish working-class district and by the early twentieth century was an important center for Polish and Lithuanian families who worked in nearby factories. The first owner, John Mark, was a mason, which may explain the unusual use of brick in a building type usually built of wood. It has a side-hall plan and hip roof, a double-leaf entry door under a hood with heavy decorated brackets, and a projecting single-story bay with recessed brick panels. Decorative brick bands mark the stories, windows are two-over-two sash in shallow arched surrounds, and the entry doors hold stained glass in geometric patterns. Tenants over the decades included machinists, brickmakers, laborers and springmakers. It was listed as a well-preserved local example of brick three-decker construction and of working-class multi-family housing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Recorded as in good condition, in residential use, with no major alterations and no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.840134-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/7933/63793337/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002435.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002435/bc5f1b06fe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002435/bc5f1b06fe-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Mark_3_Decker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Mark_3_Decker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793337","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mark_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6246758"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/mark-john-three-decker-89002435/"}
