The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"It represents the earliest phase of three-decker construction on the southern slope of Vernon Hill, a working-class Irish and Swedish neighborhood whose residents worked in nearby steel wire mills. It is also a well-preserved, well-detailed example of the Italianate style of three-decker popular locally in the late 19th century.","narrative":"Built around 1888 at 7 Maxwell Street in Worcester, this three-decker is one of the earliest surviving examples on the southern slope of Vernon Hill. The neighborhood was largely working-class, with mostly Irish and Swedish families, and many residents worked at the Washburn and Moen South Works or the Quinsigamond Works, both steel wire mills. From 1888 into the 1920s the house was owned and occupied by Philip Duke, a laborer, or by his son Philip F. Duke, a machinist. Architecturally it is an unusually well-preserved Italianate design with a side-hall plan, wood clapboard siding and a hip roof. The three-bay facade has a side entry with double-leaf panelled doors and a single-story porch with turned posts, bulls-eye ornament, brackets and an open balustrade. Paired brackets line the cornice, and the 2/2 windows have rope molding on the main facade caps. It retains integrity and is still residential.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as very good, with no major alterations; present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.067882-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7933/63793335/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002425.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002425/1fbbefd5e7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002425/1fbbefd5e7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phillip_Duke_3_Decker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phillip_Duke_3_Decker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793335","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Duke_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7183474"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/duke-philip-three-decker-89002425/"}
