It is part of a row of similar multi-family houses, and its architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is tied to the Scandinavian, working-class, multi-family neighborhood that grew north of Belmont Street in the late 19th century. It is also a well-preserved, well-detailed and unusually ornate early Queen Anne three-decker. It is judged significant at the local level under criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1894 at 154 Eastern Avenue in Worcester, this wood-clapboard and cut-shingle three-decker is a well-preserved example of the Queen Anne style that was popular for multi-family housing in the city during the 1890s. It has a hip roof, a side-hall plan and a side-wall jog. Unlike neighboring houses of the same date, it has a three-tier porch with spindle friezes, balustrades and turned posts, beside a three-story bay window with flared shingled skirts. The house stood in an early three-decker area on the slope north of Belmont Street, settled largely by Swedish, Finn-Swede and Finnish families. Many residents worked at the nearby North Works of the Washburn and Moen Company or in other firms employing skilled metal workers. The first owner, blacksmith Eric Carlson, lived here, and early tenants included an emery wheel maker, a roller, a shoemaker and a cabinetmaker. It was listed for its link to this working-class neighborhood and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne style three-decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, and the present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.880488-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/43/7933/63793343/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002415.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002415/3e65e36499-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002415/3e65e36499-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eric_Carlson_3_Decker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eric_Carlson_3_Decker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793343","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Carlson_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5386241"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/carlson-eric-three-decker-89002415/"}
