It is part of a row of similar three-deckers.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant for its association with the Scandinavian, working-class, multi-family neighborhood that developed north of Belmont Street in the late 19th century. It is also a well-preserved, well-detailed example of the early Queen Anne style three-deckers popular in Worcester. It is nominated under criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1894, this three-decker at 146 Eastern Avenue in Worcester is a wood-frame multi-family house in the Queen Anne style. It has a hip roof, side-hall plan and side-wall jog. Its asymmetrical facade includes panelled double doors under a single-story porch with turned posts and vine-pattern brackets, beside a three-story projecting bay. Clapboard covers the walls, with shingle bands on the bay, and paired brackets decorate the cornice. The house stands in an early three-decker area on the slope north of Belmont Street, home mostly to Swedish, Finn-Swede and Finnish families, many working at the Washburn and Moen Company North Works or other metalworking firms. Erick J. Kaller, a wireworker, owned it through 1910, lived there and also owned the adjacent house at 148 Eastern Avenue; the family kept both through the 1920s. Tenants included wireworkers, a patternmaker, a blacksmith and a carpenter. The building is listed for its neighborhood associations and its well-preserved architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as very good; present use is residential, with a porch balustrade replaced.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.549591-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/71/7933/63793371/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002411.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002411/d93f542615-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002411/d93f542615-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Erick_Kaller_3_Decker_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Erick_Kaller_3_Decker_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793371","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erick_Kaller_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20888378"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/kaller-erick-three-decker-89002411/"}
